Hands: Gift of a Generation, organised by the Singapore Memory Project (SMP), showcases the memories of Singaporeans from all walks of life. More than 400 memories to celebrate the lives and experiences from nation-building years to recent times are featured. It is also a tribute to our early pioneers who have contributed to Singapore.

These stories are drawn from the pool of memories that the SMP has captured and documented through road shows, interviews, campaigns and the singaporememory.sg portal since the project began in 2011. This exhibition, incorporating the imaginative use of digital technology and interactive installations, presents a novel and engaging way for both the young and old to experience the memories of Singapore.

Here’s what you will be able to experience at the exhibition:

The Gallery

The memories of 30 Singaporeans who have lived through the nation-building years are showcased here. Their memories, expressed through stories, beautiful photographic portraits of their hands and four interview videos, serve as a window into Singapore’s past.

The more time you spend in front of each portrait, the brighter it will glow. This represents how our collective memory grows when it is shared by many people.

Remembering Room

When you step into this room, a cloud of memories on a digital wall surrounds you. Tap on the stories to explore memories on various topics such as “Growing Up”, “Yesteryear” and “Food”. You too can contribute your memories to share on the digital display.

A unique souvenir awaits you: a card that saves the memories you have contributed or the memories you’ve selected in the Remembering Room, and view them online via singaporememory.sg.

Memory Recorder

Record your memories in video or audio format here. Each memory shared unlocks a photo opportunity with interesting characters from Singapore’s past!

Memory Table

Here you can view images and listen to sounds that are evocative of a changing Singapore. Have these triggered your memories of Singapore? Write them down or illustrate them on the memory slips.

You can scan these slips on the Memory Table and they will instantaneously be featured in the Remembering Room.

Memory Pool

Children, you can share your memories too. Sketch or scribble digitally onto a touchscreen, and your memories will appear in a “pool”, just like swimming fishes! You can “scoop” these memories up with your hands to “catch” and view them.

Programmes

Our exhibition-related public programmes are not to be missed! Bring the whole family down to The Plaza, participate in exciting games and be entertained by performances on stage. There will also be “live” interviews with some of the memory contributors featured in the exhibition

Dates: 10 August, 7 September and 5 October 2013

Time:  12 noon to 4pm
